How to Add a Signature Image (PNG) to a PDF
You have a transparent PNG of your signature (scanned, drawn, or generated). You want to drop it onto contract page 7 and email it back. PDFShed makes this a 4-click job.
The problem
The contract you received has a "Sign here" line on page 7. You've been signing PDFs by drawing with a mouse, which looks awful. You have a clean signature PNG you scanned in. You want to use it.
Use the tool now
Open the sign pdf tool and follow the steps below.
Step-by-step
- 1
Open the Sign PDF tool
Drop your contract in.
- 2
Click "Upload signature image"
Pick your transparent PNG. Most signature PNGs are small (under 100 KB).
- 3
Drag to the right page and position
Navigate to page 7. Drag your signature to the "Sign here" line. Resize using corner handles to fit.
- 4
Repeat on other signature lines
For multi-signature contracts (date, witness lines), drop the image multiple times in different positions.
- 5
Save and download
Click Apply → Download. The signed PDF retains all original content; your signature is overlaid as image.
Pro tips
- •Transparent PNG (no background) looks far more natural than JPG (which has white background). Use a tool like remove.bg or Photoshop to create transparency from a phone scan.
- •Black ink scans well. Blue ink scans look amateurish on most paper backgrounds.
- •For frequent signing, save your signature PNG to your phone's "Photos > Albums > Signatures" for quick access.
- •After signing, [flatten the PDF](/en/guides/flatten-pdf-form-after-filling) so the signature can't be repositioned by a recipient.
Frequently asked questions
Will the signature look pixelated?
Use a 300+ DPI scan and the signature looks crisp. 72 DPI mobile screenshots look pixelated when printed at full size.
Can I draw a signature instead?
Yes — Sign PDF tool has a draw mode. Mouse-drawn signatures look amateur; drawn-on-tablet signatures look natural.
Is a signature image legally binding?
In most jurisdictions, yes — under ESIGN Act / eIDAS, an image of your signature placed with intent to sign is enforceable. For high-stakes legal documents, use a digital certificate signature ([Sign PDF](/en/tools/sign-pdf) supports both).
Does the signature stay visible if the recipient prints?
Yes — it's embedded in the PDF as an image, prints at the position and size you placed it.
