How to Sign a PDF Without Printing (Free, No DocuSign Account)

Print → sign → scan → email → repeat is the worst office workflow ever invented. DocuSign does it digitally but wants $10–25/month. PDFShed signs any PDF in your browser, free, with a typed, drawn, or uploaded signature image.

100% browser-based — files never uploadedUpdated May 6, 2026

The problem

A landlord, employer, or vendor sends a PDF asking for your signature. You don't have a printer at home (or paper, or a scanner), don't want to install Adobe Acrobat, and won't create a DocuSign account just to sign one document.

Use the tool now

Open the sign pdf tool and follow the steps below.

Open Tool

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Open the Sign PDF tool

Drop the unsigned PDF into the embedded tool below. The document loads instantly in the browser preview — your file is never uploaded.

  2. 2

    Create your signature

Three options: (1) Type your name in a signature font — fastest; (2) Draw with mouse, finger, or stylus — most authentic; (3) Upload a transparent PNG of a real signature you scanned once.

  3. 3

Place the signature on the PDF

Drag the signature box to the signature line. Resize by dragging corners. You can also add the date, initials, or print-name fields.

  4. 4

    Download the signed PDF

Click Apply → Download. The output is a flattened PDF — your signature is part of the page, not a removable annotation.

Pro tips

  • For legal documents, drawn signatures look most authentic and hold up better in disputes than typed ones.
  • If you sign a lot of documents, save your signature image once (transparent PNG) and re-upload — way faster than redrawing.
  • For documents requiring witnesses, use the Form Filler tool to add witness fields, then have each witness sign on their own device.
  • A drawn signature is legally binding in the US (E-Sign Act), UK (Electronic Communications Act), and EU (eIDAS) for most contracts. Real estate and wills often need notarization regardless.

Frequently asked questions

Is a typed signature legally valid?

In most jurisdictions, yes — for routine contracts. Courts have upheld typed signatures repeatedly. For wills, real estate transfers, and notarized affidavits, you typically need a wet signature or formal e-signature service.

Will Adobe Acrobat detect this as a real signature?

Adobe will see the visual signature but will not show a "verified" cryptographic signature checkmark — that requires a paid digital certificate from a certificate authority.

Can the recipient remove or edit my signature?

No. The output is flattened — the signature is rendered into the page itself, not stored as a movable annotation. To prove unalterability, encrypt the output with Encrypt PDF afterward.

Does PDFShed track or log my signatures?

No. The signature is created and applied entirely in your browser. PDFShed has no record of what you signed or when.
